Playing the Trump Card

My Journey to the Top of the Best Seller List

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

It may be time for me to play the Trump card.

A little background: I am not a political person, at least publicly, and especially not over the internet. From what I have observed, there are only two sides, more accurately, two tribes. If you pick one and post something you are showered with love and hate in equal measures, and no one is swayed in the slightest by anything you write. I do not wish to enter this world of gotchas, yeah buts and obscene insults.

But I do want to sell more books. Enter Donald Trump.

The Guardian of Detritus includes a brief mention of Trump on page 71. It was conceived and written years before he became a Presidential candidate. It is, of course, a put-down — but not a political one. I just thought, and continue to think, that the guy is a massive jerk. How anyone cannot see that is beyond me, but obviously there are a lot of people who can’t, or don’t want to.

My dilemma is this: I can draw some badly needed attention to my book if I mention Trump in a tweet, but in doing so I will find myself standing in the middle of the world’s nastiest intersection, where contemporary politics meets social media. I also will be contributing, in my own small and unimportant way, to the crazy self-serving media hype that feeds the monster. I was mad when Saturday Night Live let him guest host, and I believe he gets an unwarranted amount of news coverage. Why? Because he boosts ratings and sells newspapers and magazines. And maybe books. It’s a racist, sexist, un-American bandwagon, but we all jump on because it serves our needs.

I’m going to have to think about this one and back to you.
